Here come the funny dog costumes!

Here come the funny dog costumes!

The witching hour is nearly upon us, and it’s time for funny dog costumes. Plus a couple of Halloween safety tips for your pets.

“Should I take my Morkie trick or treating with us?”

If you’re taking both children and a dog on your own, that can be a real handful.

And as small dogs, Morkies aren’t always as well socialized as larger dogs and can be frightened more easily.

My advice – if your kids are older and don’t need your  supervision, or if another adult can come with you, then give it a try. But be prepared to take your Morkie home when he’s tired or overwrought.

Kids teach dogs how to trick or treat

Halloween safety tips for your pets

  • toxic Halloween candy – chocolate especially is deadly for small dogs like Morkies, and tinfoil and cellophane wrappers can be hazardous if swallowed. Be sure to keep your children’s haul out of the dog’s way.
  • don’t forget raisins – just a few can cause serious health problems for your Morkie including kidney failure, so keep these treats securely out of the way too.
  • lit candles – your Morkie could accidentally knock over a lit candle – consider using a no flame, no mess alternative to light up your jack-o-lantern.
  • wires and cords could harm your dog – dogs love to chew and Morkies are no exception. Make sure all wires and cords from temporary displays and decorations are properly secured and out of reach.
  • constant door bells and strangers – can be very stressful for your Morkie. Sometimes accidents happen and your Morkie might make a run for it when you’re opening the door. Be sure to keep his I.D. on, and ideally keep him quiet and comfortable in another room during the peak of activity.  Like the 4th of July, Halloween is a peak time for runaways according to the ASPCA.

Three more tips for Halloween safety

Plan ahead

As an ounce or two of prevention, just in case your Morkie gets out the door the night of Halloween, make sure he has his tag on at all times, with your current phone number on it.

Check out which emergency Veterinary Clinics will be open in your area that night and stick that number up on the fridge.

Some time-outs

You may want to remove your dog from the party central action if things get too hectic.

A quiet room or his crate, is a far better solution than a stressed-out dog. Don’t assume your partner or someone else is watching the dog; be explicit about who’s in charge and plan ahead for the dog’s needs, like rescheduling that work before trick or trick time.

Pumpkins and more

Plants like pumpkins and decorative corn are considered to be relatively nontoxic – but if your Morkie chews on them at all, digestive woes will probably follow.

Canned, pure pumpkin, on the other hand, is very good for your Morkie – a tablespoon per day can ease both diarrhea AND constipation! (Not pie fillling, pure pumpkin)

The candies and other goodies inside the piñata are the riches of the kingdom of heaven, that the virtuous who are able to overcome sin will receive. It’s a lot to teach your Morkie, but….

Father’s Day took a long time to catch on

According to Wikipedia, the idea of a Father’s Day celebration goes back to 1907, when a memorial service was held for a large group of men who died in a mining accident in West Virginia.

From there, a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd ran with the ball; her inspiration was her Civil-War-veteran father who raised 6 kids on his own.

She officially launched Father’s Day in 1910, but the idea fizzled out until many years later.

FINALLY, in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honouring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.

Cutest Small Dog Breeds

Cutest Small Dog Breeds

Of all the cutest dogs in the world, which ones do you think are the cutest SMALL DOG breeds? That’s a hard question, given there are at least 339 dog breeds in the world (the number varies a bit, depending on who’s counting). Plus all the cross breed possibilities of those 339 breeds. Phew!

I’ve known and loved a lot of dogs, but I still can’t make up my mind. But I’m down to three finalists for cutest small dog breeds:

Yorkie

Morkie

Maltese

What about you? Which do YOU think are the cutest dogs ever?

Why are these the cutest dogs?

Yorkie ♥  Morkie ♥ Maltese

Each one of them is known as an affectionate dog breed.

From my experience of them, I’d have to say, I can’t even pick which of the three is the MOST affectionate.

It seems that the male of each breed is even more affectionate, but that could just be my experience.

If you don’t believe me, just google it.

What else makes the Yorkie, Morkie and Maltese the cutest dogs ever?

Long fluffy coats. They’re soft as can be, perfect to pet and you don’t get covered with fur! Like Morkies – and other small dogs – that don’t shed

As much as I love short haired dogs like Chihuahuas, I’m not crazy about being covered in short, spiky hairs that have anchored deep into the fabric of my clothes.

Or huge clumps of soft, long hair, like from a Golden Retriever.

Yorkie Morkie Maltese are not only the BEST, they are among the Longest living dogs too!

13 Dog Facts You Probably Don’t Know

13 Dog Facts You Probably Don’t Know

A Yorkshire Terrier's nose very close up, illustrating idea that a dogs sense of smell is far, far greater than ours.

1. The “smell center” of a dog’s brain is 40 times larger than yours.

Dogs can smell thousands of times better than humans. Their noses have millions more scent receptors—for example, a human nose averages 5 million while a Dachshund’s has 125 million—making them useful in sniffing out drugs, dead bodies, bed bugs, explosives, and more.

2. No two dog noses are the same.

Nose prints are like our fingerprints – unique!

A little Yorkie and a Morkie dog sleeping together.3. Dogs dream like people.

If you’ve ever noticed your Morkie twitching in her sleep, this probably means she’s dreaming. Researchers found that dogs have similar sleep patterns and brain activity as humans, and that small breeds tend to dream more than large ones.

Psychology Today suggests they’re probably imagining familiar activities like playing outside or chasing their tail.

4. Dogs are as smart as a two-year-old baby.

According to canine researcher and author Stanley Coren, your toddler and pup are about on par when it comes to brains.

He also contends that man’s best friend can count, understand more than 150 words, and even trick people or other dogs to get treats. Intelligence varies based on breed—Border collies are the smartest.

5. Dogs only mate twice a year.

This little Morkie leaning on a heart shaped pillow is all ready for love.

Unspayed females only go into heat twice a year, so dog breeders need to plan carefully.

6. Tail wagging = happy dog?

If your dog excitedly wags his tail, it means he’s happy to see you, right? Not necessarily. According to Discovery.com, dogs wag their tails to the right when they’re happy and to the left when they’re frightened. Wagging low means they’re insecure; and rapid tail wagging accompanied by tense muscles or dilated pupils can signal aggression.

7. Puppies are born blind and deaf.

Newborn dogs are still developing, according to Psychology Today, so their ear canals and eyes are still closed. Most puppies open their eyes and respond to noises after about two weeks.

8. Dogs have a “sixth sense.”

In a 2010 poll, 67% of pet owners reported their pets acting strangely right before a storm, and 43% said their pets acted funny right before something bad happened.

The top clues? Whining, erratic behavior, or trying to hide in a safe place. There are even reports that dogs can sense illnesses, like cancer.

9. Dogs have sweat glands only in their paws.

Dogs have only two ways to cool down: sweating through the pads of their paws, and panting.

10. Your Morkie’s feet can smell like Fritos.

Dogs feet can smell like the popular corn chip, Fritos. Picture shows puppy paws and bag of Fritos.

Some pet owners might notice the scent of corn chips or popcorn lingering around their dog. This is called “frito feet,” and it happens when sweat and bacteria builds up in the paws.

11. “Dog breath” is actually unhealthy.

You might expect your dog’s mouth to smell like, well, dog. But persistent bad breath can actually be a sign of dental disease or other health problems. If you don’t already, have your dog’s teeth examined by a Veterinarian every year.

12. It’s not unusual for dogs to eat poop.

It’s no secret: dogs often eat their own poop (and other fecal matter). But though it might seem gross, the ASPCA says it’s perfectly normal, stemming from their pre-domestication days thousands of years ago.

More common in puppies, older dogs usually grow out of it, although some do it into adulthood.

13. A dog’s unique scent is secreted in its glands.

And yes, those scent glands are located in their backsides (called ‘anal glands,’ on either side of the tail). Dogs are notorious for sniffing one another there; it’s how they identify others and also what they use to mark their territory.

Your Morkie and Spring Fever

Your Morkie and Spring Fever

Have you had a long, hard winter? Then you’re probably glad that yesterday was the first day of spring. What about your Morkie? Can he get spring fever?

We get spring fever and dogs (and all mammals) do to some degree.

Scientists tell us it’s all about a little biological clock in the middle of the brain that’s affected by light. So as days get longer and nights get shorter, this little clock sends signals to sleep less, eat more and look for a mate.

Most dogs are more energized and eager to get outside when the weather warms up. They’re even more interested in sniffing everything outside, and in extending their walks. This is when a number of dogs try their hardest to get off the leash and just RUN.

A couple of things to be aware of — always keep your Morkie on a leash and be vigilant that he doesn’t dash out of your house onto the road. It’s a sad fact that in the U.S., cars kill 1.2 million dogs each year and 5.4 million cats. What with spring fever, your pets might be more eager than usual to get outside, so watch the door.

Keep your Morkie on his leash

Spring is also allergy time

It’s also the time when seasonal allergies start up again.

If your Morkie has runny eyes or is sneezing, that could be the problem. Other signs of allergies are itching, and biting at paws and skin.

Talk to your Veterinarian, because dogs CAN take Benadryl. Yup, the over-the-counter medication that we take. Be sure you get the CHILDREN’s liquid version, WITHOUT artificial sweeteners or alcohol. And do check with your Vet first.

To alleviate some of the effects of allergies, it’s recommended that you:

  • wipe down your dog’s coat every time he comes in, to remove excess pollen
  • soak his feet in Epsom salts to reduce swelling and wash away pollen

And then there’s mud…

Britain’s Daily Mail asked readers to share their best pictures of muddy dogs. I think this one wins! Believe it or not, the pup was all cleaned up after just an hour in the tub.  THIS WAS AN ALL LIGHT-COLOR DOG!

See more muddy dogs on the Daily Mail website.

P.S. Blogger Paul Janson – link – reminds us that “Spring Fever” used to be a real disease, thanks to a long winter with little in the way of fruits and vegetables. Back in the 1700s, spring fever was probably really scurvy – the lack of Vitamin C, and it was a serious, often fatal illness. Read more of Paul’s writing here.

10 Ways to Spoil Your Morkie

10 Ways to Spoil Your Morkie

Yay! It’s the weekend! Time for you and your Morkie to have some fun.

1. Is there anything a dog loves more than a walk? They don’t seem to care if it’s cold, raining or snowing. They just wanna walk, so grab that leash and off you go.

let's go for a walk

2. Grooming can be a fun and bonding time if you’re super-patient and gentle. Use grooming as a way to really get to know your Morkie, and throw in a bit of massage too. Use a good-quality metal comb with teeth that are ‘medium’ spaced. Comb a very small part of the hair at a time if it’s matted. To get your Morkie used to you combing him, run the comb all over his body on the “other” (non-teeth) side.

3. Play Fetch! Call out the Terrier in your Morkie, and get her involved in an active game of indoor fetch. Since Yorkies were originally bred to catch rats and mice in factories, they’re keen to chase down any little toy you throw… try it, your Morkie will love it.

spoil your morkie

4. Be sociable. Visit friends and family who also own small dogs and get your Morkie socialized. Being with other dogs is a great way to ensure your pup stays centred and happy, and helps reduce that Diva Dog attitude that many toys get.

5. Bake! There are lots of recipes for healthy dog biscuits online and you can make them Morkie-size. Use quality ingredients and you can cut calories too: the average commercial dog biscuit has more than 80 calories.

6. Cuddle. Grab a great book and get snuggled down in your bed with your Morkie. That “dog den” feeling is one dogs really love, and if your Morkie doesn’t sleep with you, it’ll be an even bigger treat.

sleeping morkie

7. Go for a car ride… and not to the Vet’s. Sometimes the only time we take our dogs out is to go to the Vet or groomer’s and then we wonder why they’re not so keen on cars… take a little drive and see if your Morkie doesn’t come to love the car. (Don’t forget to secure your pup in a small kennel carrier or with a doggy belt)

8. Add some more ‘stuffing’ to your Morkie’s bed... preferably one or two of your old t-shirts. The bed will be softer, and your Morkie can dig around and make a nest to his delight. And if it’s your old stuff, so much the better!

9. Sing to your Morkie! What’s cuter than seeing her head turn in puzzlement as she listens! Silly songs with lots of high and low notes, will keep your Morkie amused and engaged.

10. Praise, praise, praise! Look your Morkie straight in the eye and tell him how’s he the smartest, most handsome, best dog ever! Use your Morkie’s name a lot. Keep talking in a low, warm voice and watch your Morkie lap it up!

Hallowe’en Morkies

Hallowe’en Morkies

It’s that time of year – are you and your Morkie ready?? Once again, the lowly PUMPKIN is the most popular pet costume this year – come on people, can’t we be more creative 🙂  Also on the list, the devil, a hotdog, bee, cat, witch bow tie and pirate.

morkie halloween costume

morkie dressed as a pumpkinBy the way, here’s how costumes rank for Halloween for people. (This is adults and kids). The favourites are —

  • Witch
  • Princess
  • Pirate
  • Vampire
  • Zombie
  • Batman
  • Cat
  • Ghost

If your Morkie is like most dogs, he doesn’t really like wearing a costume, unless you’ve accustomized him to clothes from puppyhood.

When dogs are dressed up and not liking it, they simply freeze. They won’t take a step, won’t look  up, won’t do a thing. Here are the signs your dog is hating his halloween look.

Signs your dog is stressed:

  • Head down
  • Whale eyes (open wide, can see the whites)
  • Ears back
  • Turning away
  • Single paw raised
  • Freezing / refusing to move
  • Flattening to the ground

In that case, better to go with a festive collar, or  ummm, a festive collar.

Big runaway night

Even if he’s not afraid of his costume, your Morkie might choose October 31st to run off in the night. (The biggest runway night of the year is July 4th thanks to fireworks), so keep doors closed or better still, keep your Morkie in a quiet, closed off room or in his kennel cage.

Here are some handy safety reminders:

Getting a great picture of your Morkie

Getting a great picture of your Morkie

Here are 10 ways to make your Morkie photos better and more interesting.

Morkie and big dog

Note how this superb picture follows all the rules.

  1. Take lots and lots of pictures – for every 100 shots you take, expect to get 2 or 3 great ones.
  2. Pick a time when he’s relaxed, even tired out.
  3. Take pictures of your Morkie in his natural surroundings. If your Morkie spends all his time sitting on the couch, then that is the best place to take the photos.
  4. Let your dog sniff out the camera. Don’t hesitate to bribe him with treats and use a squeaky toy held up beside the camera to get his attention.
  5. Get down to your Morkie’s level. Photos from above can make him look like a dwarf.
  6. Outside photos are great on a shady or overcast day – sunlight makes the picture harsh, with hard shadows.
  7. Check the background – no telephone poles or trees “growing” out of your dog’s head.
  8. Avoid using a flash – your dog will get weird demon-possession eyes and his fur will look washed out.
  9. Pick Sports mode if you have the choice on your camera. Sports mode uses a faster shutter speed to “freeze” the subject. If your dog is moving around, a slow shutter speed might leave you with a blurry picture. Plus, Sports mode will use a special focusing system that constantly adjusts the focus of the camera. Without this, the camera focuses once and locks that way. If your focus is locked on your pet and he or she moves, you’ll end up with out-of-focus pictures.
  10. Remember “the law of thirds” – which says basically, don’t center your subject.
