When I read that the other day, I felt so sad for the owners. What’s worse than not knowing where your beloved pet is? And by offering a $500 reward you can tell these people are really affected.
So why do dogs run away and what can you do about it? Here are the 4 most common reasons dogs run away.
1. Boredom. For a toy dog like a Yorkie, Morkie or Maltese, one reason they might wander when given the chance is boredom. Perhaps the dog isn’t getting enough exercise and enough time outdoors to do the dog sniffing thing.
2. Sex. If your dog isn’t neutered, he or she will definitely wander looking for a mate. Just one reason why all pet dogs should be neutered unless you’re a professional breeder. Three to four million dogs a year are euthanized according to the American Humane Society! Add to that Canada’s number and you have approximately eight per minute. So do get your dog neutered.
3. Easy access to escape – is the gate or fence unlocked? Door left open? The mischievous Yorkie, Morkie or Maltese will make a game of getting out so double check.
4. Fright. Loud noises like fireworks or parties — can really scare a little dog. Put your pup in the other room, and definitely keep him far from fireworks.
