Most popular dog names

thumb_bella-in-jeans_1024The winners are in for the most popular dog names and once again, Bella and Max top the charts.

Some of 2015’s trends?  More people are giving their dogs people names than ever before. Almost HALF of dogs were given a human tag last year. Daisy, Molly, Maggie, Charlie, Jack and Cooper are just a few of the examples.

Another 10% of dog names are inspired by pop culture. Harry Potter, Frozen, the Hunger Games and of course Twilight, are inspirations for new dog owners.

Food and drink names are next, with plenty of names like Ginger, Pepper, Oreo, Peanut and Olive. And drinks are always inspirational – Guinness, Brandy and Porter. Although an 80s favourite, Bailey, has fallen off the charts – wasn’t every Golden Retriever named Bailey back in the day?

Best Morkie names?

Whatever name you pick, make sure it’s the right one. You’ll be using it between 30,000 and 35,000 times over your Morkie’s lifetime, according to experts.

Don’t make it complicated to say or embarrassing when you call your Morkie at the dog park. And don’t pick a name that’s close to a command – like Stacey which could be confused with Stay.

The hip website SheKnows has some great names for small dogs, including these:

hello my name is morkie red

Acorn

Cheerio

Bagel

Bijou

Biscuit

Bug

Cookie

Thimbelina

How the most popular names are determined: VPI Pet Insurance has a database of over 500,000 names. They review the new ones each year and prepare a report on what’s hot, trending or wacky.

The kids are fighting about whether the Yorkie should be called “Fluffy” or “Puffy.”  Your husband thinks a sports name would be perfect, like “Forty-Niners” and your friend at work is halfway expecting you to name the dog after her!

Wondering what to name your Morkie? Think it over because experts claim we say our dog’s names an average of 35,000 times over the pet’s lifetime!

Popular or unique?

Every year, the website Vetstreet.com, together with a leading pet insurance company, publishes the most popular names of dogs and cats for the previous year, based on registered policies.

For the third straight year, “Bella” reigns as the most common name among both dogs and cats in 2014. “Bailey” was a close second in the dog category and “Max” was once again the feline runner up.

  1. Bella
  2. Bailey
  3. Max
  4. Lucy
  5. Molly
  6. Charlie
  7. Daisy
  8. Buddy
  9. Maggie
  10. Sophie

Tip:  You’ll want to pick a name your dog can recognize – it shouldn’t rhyme with commands like “stay” or “sit” (so no “Rays” or ‘Bit’ Morkies lol!) Some experts say that dogs don’t hear initial “s” sounds well, so names like Suzy and Sam sound like “Uzy” and “Am.”
